Loris: The Epic Novel

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I heart Carl Hiaasen. Seriously, I can’t get enough of the guy. And I have a terrible feeling that I may have just finished his last book. Horrors! *Frenzied Googling* Nope! sighs of relief – I was wrong. There’s plenty more. God bless Florida’s horrendous development and tourism industry. It’s shocking but it sure makes for good reading.

I’m not even going to start on the Wellington weather. Let me just say I’m freaking grateful I’m going to Southern California in a month. (Aaarh I’m going to Southern California in a month!!!!).

Guess what else I’m excited about? This:

 SlowLorisBook

From Publishers Weekly:
“A seemingly lethargic lemur proves appearances can deceive in this amusing tale. British newcomer Deacon subtly draws readers into Loris’s supposedly sluggish zoo existence. Three successive spreads track the lackadaisical fellow, noteworthy for their continual change in perspective: “It took Loris ten minutes to eat a satsuma… twenty minutes to get from one end of his branch to the other… and an hour to scratch his bottom.” As Loris plods along his branch, the twisted bark spirals across the gutter towards the reader. Then comes a revelation: “At night, when all the other animals were sound asleep, Loris got up and did things… FAST…” He is not a lump after all, but a tie-and-hat-wearing, satsuma-eating nocturnal party animal. Other zoo animals soon catch on to Loris’s secret life and join him in an unrestrained nighttime spree in which bunnies sport neckties and a meercat wears a fez.”

AHA! Haven’t I always maintained that they are far more interesting than they seem! There is more to lorises than those huge disgustingly cute eyes… oh, those eyes…

Ok, so it’s not an epic novel. But Lorises coming alive at night? Bunnies in tuxedos and a fez-wearing meercat? Um, needless to say I am ordering a copy. Like, right now.

In other major news, I’m considering Adopting A Loris. Who wants to help by donating towards my Loris Fund?
